A breath as a dia­gnos­is: Früh pack­aging innov­a­tion from DBI

A breath says more than a thou­sand words – what if it could even reveal a per­son’s state of health? That’s exactly what Deep Breath Intel­li­gence (DBI) is work­ing on: using state-of-the-art breath ana­lys­is, the Swiss com­pany makes meta­bol­ic pro­cesses and dis­ease pro­gres­sion vis­ible – non-invas­ively, in real time, and in a patient-friendly way.

Every exhal­a­tion con­tains tiny molecules (VOCs) that allow con­clu­sions to be drawn about an indi­vidu­al’s phen­o­type. DBI com­bines high-pre­ci­sion mass spec­tro­metry with machine learn­ing to obtain valu­able data for dia­gnos­is and ther­apy monitoring.

Togeth­er with the Uni­ver­sity Hos­pit­als of Zurich and Basel, DBI is con­duct­ing numer­ous clin­ic­al stud­ies to fur­ther val­id­ate its innov­at­ive res­pir­at­ory dia­gnostics. In the future, clin­ic­al pic­tures from onco­logy, pneu­mo­logy, and endo­crino­logy could bene­fit from non-invas­ive dia­gnostics through breath analysis.

To ensure that these highly sens­it­ive tests func­tion reli­ably not only in the labor­at­ory but also in decent­ral­ized loc­a­tions such as doc­tors’ offices, more than just cut­ting-edge tech­no­logy is required: the appro­pri­ate breath col­lect­or (sealed-edge bag with mouth­piece), the cor­rect final pack­aging, and com­plete doc­u­ment­a­tion in accord­ance with GMP stand­ards. Only in this way can the product reach the patient safely and return intact to the labor­at­ory for analysis.
